HAPPY NEW YEAR and NEW GRADES POSTED!

Posted by iateacher on December 31, 2006

Hello to all!!

First, let me say to everyone out there that I wish you a wonderful and happy new year. May 2007 be one of your best ever!!

I am also writing to let you know that I have posted new grades on my web site. (Yeah, I know, I can hear some of my students now ” ’bout time, Mr. Yerington – I’ve been waiting forever’ ” — Hey, lighten up guys, it was Christmas and my birthday. Besides I never actually gave a DATE for when they would be posted. ūüôā

Anyway, you are welcome to check them out if you remember your PIN. If not, I guess you will have to e-mail me for it (eayering AT machlink DOT com ) [remove the AT and the DOT and replace them with the punctuation — I’m trying to cut down on some of my spam!] or wait until January 3rd when we go back to school and check the postings in the room!

Thanks

Mr. Yerington

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Posted by iateacher on December 22, 2006

As I am sitting here watching the Christmas video with my students I thought, “What a great time to write a holiday post!” So, here we go!¬†

I hope all of you have a wonderful, peaceful, and enjoyable Christmas season as well as a¬†prosperous New Year.¬† Enjoy the holidays and, to my students, your time off!¬† I will see all of you in 2007 (or out shopping…)

Also, just a note, grades will be updated sometime during the break and will include the brain and senses test for those students who don’t want to wait until January 3 to find out their score!

Thanks

Mr. Yerington

Brain and Senses Test Coming Up

Posted by iateacher on December 18, 2006

This Thursday (December 21) students in all my science classes will be taking the test over the brain and senses unit.  This is a 41 point test and I have been encouraging students NOT to wait until Wednesday night to study.  I will have a review session for them on Wednesday, however they should be studying already to make sure they earn a good grade.

Some important things for them to study are as follows:

  • Recognize the following terms and definitions:¬† structure, function, rods, cones, neuron, cerebellum, cerebrum, nucleus, and medulla
  • Know what causes the blind spot
  • Know what happens to the pupil under varying light conditions
  • Know the two parts of the eye that act as a lens
  • Be able to write the three main parts of the brain
  • Know the two types of nerve cells
  • Be able to explain why the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa
  • Be able to DRAW (sketch) a pair of neurons
  • Be able to label major parts of the eye and the brain

That’s about all — students also need to be prepared to write down three more things they learned that were not on my test.

Thanks

Science Homework

Posted by iateacher on December 13, 2006

This was NOT posted on my daily homework page so I thought I better get it posted up here!  Students in science will be having a very short assignment today.  It is a one page worksheet with a large picture of a brain on it.  They need to label the three main parts of the brain and then on the back they are to describe the functions of the three parts.  (EVERY year I have students that forget to do the functions so please make sure you double check that!)

Also, students should have all the information they need IF (and only if) they brought their notebook home.¬† We wrote down quite a few notes that will help them, but if they leave their notebook here it won’t help!!

Thanks

NEW LOOK!

Posted by iateacher on December 11, 2006

OK, so I’m crusing around Word Press (web blog hosting place) tonight and discover they have a cool new theme that allows me to TOTALLY customize how my blog looks. I try it out, and I am VERY impressed! Not only can I change my header to our school colors (as I have done) but now you can see at a glance (on my right hand side bar) my most recent posts as well as other good information. Tell me what you think!! Just leave me a comment! (Please note that I welcome comments on ANY of my posts and right now you DO NOT have to become a member of Word Press to comment. However, I DO moderate all comments submitted.)

Thanks

Classroom News – December 11, 2006

Posted by iateacher on December 11, 2006

I really have to work on staying on top of my classroom news!¬† Never seems to be enough hours in the day!¬† Oh well, here’s what’s happening!

SCIENCE

Mrs. Martinez and I have made the collective decision to put away the FOSS kit for the time being for several reasons.¬† One, we are getting close to the winter break and we don’t want the unit to go past that and have the students forget everything we have talked about.¬† Two, the FOSS kit tends to focus more on the sense than the brain and we like to do more with the brain.¬† There are other reasons, but those are the two main ones.¬† So, we will be working on the brain up¬†until winter break.¬† There will be a pig brain dissection on December 19th!!¬† There will be a final test on December 21.¬† Look for an upcoming post that will talk about items to study!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We are finishing up with the United States and Canada.¬† We are working on our last three sections of the book — at this point it looks like there will NOT be a test over Chapter 5, but only the section quizzes.¬† In January it looks like we will begin our study of Latin America.¬† Students will be turning in their blue books and receiving a red book in it’s place.¬† In January I will post the topics we will cover in that book!

Thanks

Adopt-A-Senior Activity (5th period ONLY)

Posted by iateacher on December 4, 2006

I’m not sure how many of you check my blog if you only have a student in my homeroom, but I thought I would post this and find out!

We are in the midst of our annual sixth grade adopt-a-senior activity.¬† We have done this for longer than I have been working here at West.¬† It’s a great way to help make someone else’s Christmas just a little bit brighter.¬† Here’s how it works:¬† Your student MAY come home with an index card on which will be an item for them to purchase.¬† The student then brings it back to me and we put it under my Christmas tree until the week before break.¬† Then myself and the other three teachers that teach math and science deliver the goods to our senior citizen.¬† Please be aware that participation in COMPLETELY voluntary.¬† If your child brings home a card and you feel that you can’t purchase the item that’s fine.¬† Send it back and I will put it back for someone else to take.¬†

I think your for your generosity and feel free to contact me with any questions

Thanks

Mr. Yerington
