GRADE POSTINGS: Re: Problems

Posted by iateacher on September 27, 2006

Hi parents/guardians/students:

Some of you have e-mailed me that you are unable to check grades. After receiving several comments of the same type and doing some investigating I found something interesting. It seems that so far all of you that have commented that you are unable to view grades have some things in common:

  • You are using Windows XP
  • You are using Internet Explorer version 6.x
  • When you enter an INCORRECT pin the system says “Incorrect Pin” but entering everything correctly results in nothing happening

First, I have e-mailed the company that makes my grade book and am waiting to see what they have to say in the line of ideas.

Second, I have one last “shot in the dark” that MAY help — run your Windows update and see if you have the latest updates from Microsoft — restart your computer and see if that helps. Let me know since I have NO idea if that has anything at all to do with it.

Lastly, if you are interested in doing so, you can download Internet Explorer version 7 release candidate 1 from Microsoft here (You will need to select your version of Windows and then hit download. Release Candidate 1 means it is NOT an official release by Microsoft yet. They are still testing it and will eventually have RC 2 and then finally the full release. However, I have been using this version at school since the first day with no problems and I have been able to bring up grades.

I do apologize for the inconvenience and hope to find an answer soon!

CLASSROOM NEWS — SEPTEMBER 21, 2006

Posted by iateacher on September 21, 2006

Welcome to the first edition of my classroom news!  I will try to post about once a month, but when life gets busy who knows!!  Anyway, on to the news!

SCIENCE

In science we will be finishing up Ecology soon after everyone gets back from Langwood.  There will (at least at this point) NOT be a final chapter test.  I had to leave some things out this year in order to get our next unit started in time.

Speaking of our next unit, we will be starting that either the last week of September or first week of October.  This unit is on the Brain and Senses and I am VERY excited about it.  I have taught the brain for several years, however, this year we are trying out a kit based approach from FOSS.  The kit includes all the materials, assessments, overhead transparencies, etc.  This unit will take approximately 12 weeks and we are being asked to do the whole thing in order to find out how it works and if it may be something we are interested in adopting for next year.  I will post updates as we begin the unit and try it out.  Please let me know if your student comes home and talks about anything we did and how they liked it as I would like to gather comments during the year!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We are currently studying the United States and Canada.  I tend to put my emphasis on Canada since we live in the United States and hopefully know something about it!  This book will take approximately one third of the school year.  We will be taking map quizzes of Canada starting next Thursday (Sept. 28).  Each student received a map of Canada from me.  I also taught them a couple of phrases that should help them remember most of the provinces and territorries.  Please remind them to study!

During this book we will be teaming up with Mrs. Bertotti to work on a “Famous Canadians” research paper.  Students will select a famous Canadian and write a paragraph nominating that person for the “Canadian Hall of Fame”  Look for more details later!

One last thing concerning social studies — almost every week students will receive a Geo-Theme as homework — they get this on Monday and they are not due until Friday.  So, if your child waits until Thursday to start and then complains about not having enough time – ask them when they got the paper!!

Thanks!!

SCIENCE HOMEWORK FOR SEPTEMBER 19

Posted by iateacher on September 19, 2006

All science students received a worksheet today over Chapter 3, Section 2.  Once again, if they have their notes that we wrote in class this assignment should go quickly and be quite easy to complete.  For those of you who look over your child’s work — it is really important that they answer the whole question.  Sometimes the questions asks for a definition AND an example and when they leave out the examples they lose points!!

Also, a reminder that there is a quiz tomorrow — there is a post dated September 17 that talks about what to study!

Thanks

SCIENCE HOMEWORK – SEPTEMBER 18

Posted by iateacher on September 18, 2006

ALL classes received the homework today.  They are to draw (and color) a simple food chain.  I gave them plain white paper to do this on and we talked about examples in class of a food chain.

Thanks

NO GEO-THEME FOR SOCIAL STUDIES!!

Posted by iateacher on September 18, 2006

I really wasn’t thinking this weekend.  I had down that I would be assigning a Geo-Theme to my social studies classes.  That WILL NOT be happening this week or next due to Langwood.  I won’t be able to collect it this week with students at Langwood and I won’t be able to give one out next week with me at Langwood.  So, for two weeks my students get  a break on Geo-Themes!

Thanks

SCIENCE QUIZ -ECOLOGY

Posted by iateacher on September 17, 2006

Just a quick note that I plan to give a quiz over what we have learned in our ecology unit thus far. The quiz will be Wednesday of this week (September 20) providing we get as far as I am hoping. Here are some things the students will need to know for this quiz (please note that ALL of this should be in their notes!):

  • Know what an ecosystem is
  • Know the difference between producer, consumer & decomposer
  • Know the difference betweeen herbivore, carnivore & omnivore
  • Know what a food chain is (be able to give an example)
  • Know the difference between predator, prey and scavenger
  • Know what a food web is

Hopefully everyone will study and do a GREAT job!

Thanks!

GRADE POSTINGS ON WEB SITE

Posted by iateacher on September 13, 2006

I have posted the first set of grades on my web site. Your child should bring home a letter tomorrow with their student ID number and PIN code on it as well as directions for checking grades. Please be aware that this system is VERY secure. Students at West have either a five or six digit student ID number and my computer assigns them a four digit PIN creating millions of combinations! Not to mention the fact that the PIN number entered MUST match the ID number. Finally, as a final security measure, your child’s name NEVER appears on the report. Their ID number is the only identifier on the page.

With that said, I hope that puts everything into perspective. If you really do not want your child’s grades posted online you can contact me and I will be sure NOT to do so.

For those who DO want to check grades online I also maintain a mailing list. The list will send you a brief e-mail each time I update the grades. (I promise NOT to send 50 a day!! – usually you will receive one, possibly two, each week) If you wish to sign up you can click this link and enter your name and e-mail address. Then simply follow the directions in the e-mail. (You must confirm your e-mail address or you will not receive updates. This is to verify that YOU signed up and not someone else) Also, be sure to add my school e-mail (eayeringATmuscatine.k12.ia.us) to your address book to ensure the messages are not blocked by any spam filters.

Thanks!

QUIZ RESCHEDULED

Posted by iateacher on September 13, 2006

For those of you who noticed the Chapter 1, Section 1 Quiz on the assignment page (Social Studies) — that WILL NOT be happening this week. We just did not get as far as I had hoped. In fact, we didn’t even really get into the chapter at all today. Guess those things happen! The quiz will not be until sometime next week so don’t worry about it at this point!!

Thanks

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT (September 12)

Posted by iateacher on September 12, 2006

The only class that had an assignment today was my 8th period social studies class.  They started the worksheet “Meet Your Textbook” in class, but they need to finish that up and bring it back tomorrow.

I belive in science we were going to go outside today, but I didn’t trust the weather.  We will be attempting that activity tomorrow!

Thanks
